Welcome to Cheraw, South Carolina also known as the “Prettiest Town in Dixie,” located in the Northeastern part of the state within Chesterfield County. Cheraw’s name originates from its most early residents, the Cheraw Indians, who were one of the main tribes that settled the area of the upper Pee Dee. Cheraw’s history is still evident today and can be seen as you travel down the tree lined streets of the Historic District where many of the antebellum homes from centuries before are located.
Today, Cheraw continues to thrive economically due to the presence of a stable industry base and a community that takes pride in the welfare of its citizens. Cheraw is conveniently located to I-20 (60 miles) and I-95 (40 miles). Columbia, SC, the state capitol is approximately an 85 mile drive, Charlotte, NC (95 miles), Florence, SC (40 miles), and Charleston, SC (130 miles). With a short two hour drive to the coast or four hour drive to the mountains, Cheraw’s location offers the best of both worlds.
The area offers many activities for the local residents and tourists including: fishing, golfing, walking / biking trails, boating, tours of the Historic District, events coordinated by the Community Center, and entertainment provided by the local Theatre on the Green. Cheraw is host to three annual events, The Taste of Cheraw, The Spring Festival, and the South Carolina Jazz Festival.
Cheraw also has several beautiful parks in the area. Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Pee Dee River and offers many amenities including walking trails, an overlook deck, boat ramp, and picnic area. Arrowhead Park is host to many community activities; the park also has a playground, walking track, and several fields for recreational sports. The Cheraw State Park consists of 7,361 acres and 300 acre lake. The State Park offers amenities such as an 18-hole golf course, walking / biking trails, boating, fishing, and facilities for over night stay including a campground and cabins.
